Original article: Farmer dies after quad bike incident
What happened
A 51-year-old farmer has died after a quad bike incident on a property at Dixie, south of Terang in regional Victoria. WorkSafe Victoria says he was riding the quad bike when it hit a rock and rolled, causing him to sustain serious chest and arm injuries. He later died in hospital on the Friday after the incident.
WorkSafe investigators have begun looking into the circumstances around the crash to see whether further action is needed.
Context and impact
This tragic death is the fifth confirmed workplace fatality in Victoria for 2026 and the third in the agriculture sector so far this year. That’s compared with six work-related deaths at the same time last year.
Quad bike rollovers are unfortunately common on farms because the vehicles have a relatively high centre of gravity and can tip over easily, especially over rough ground or rocks.
Safety takeaways
This kind of incident highlights a few key safety points for farm work:
- Quad bikes must be used with extreme care on uneven ground, rocks and slopes.
- Operators should have good training, awareness of terrain hazards and safer alternatives when conditions are risky.
- Regular inspection of working areas to identify hidden obstacles like rocks can help prevent rollovers.
- Where possible, consider safer vehicle designs or rollover protection.
Farming is essential but risky work. Quad bikes are invaluable tools, yet they require respect and thoughtful risk management to stop these tragedies from happening.

- A 51-year-old farmer died after a quad bike struck a rock and rolled at Dixie, VIC.
